As far as hiding their true feelings go, in the alternate history of the Starshatter universe, the Japanese people only employ this when meeting with total strangers or... dealing with the enemies of the Terran Imperial Minarchy.
I guess I should get round to resubscribing to Disney+...
Never watched the earlier series, but I read the book back when I was at uni. Do have a soft spot for Clavell's novels, in spite/because of the rampant Orientalism. (I also remember reading Eric Van Lustbader's Ninja novels, which I suspect would not hold up well today.)
Just remembered a friend of mine running a short RPG game inspired by them, shadowy keiretsu/yakuza scheming with ancient martial arts lineages. I played a Japanese character who was an expert in Medieval European fencing and fought with a bastard sword.
Was that really twenty years ago now? Mono no aware, I guess...
Hey, Daniel. Thanks for replying. I know what you mean about remembering little to nothing. LOL. I caught the 80s version back when it originally aired. My mom came up to my room to watch it on this old TV my sister and I used for games. It was on late. I loved it, but Japan wouldn't come back into my life for another few years when Robotech hit the airwaves. Then it was to late to save my soul. ;) Learning languages is fun!
I remember an anthology - type series somewhere called " JAPAN - 120 ". Interesting, but it was like a Mulligan's Stew / chowder / whatever. A tad rambling.
TBS aka WTBS showed anime & live action from Japan. Star Blazers was a GINORMOUS draw back then.
I've always found the translated anthologies produced to be dry. Even the fiction. Like, somehow, only academics do that kind of thing. Where's all the action and adventure fiction?
Princess Mononoke was very good. I have yet to find it in the contents of any streaming services, so I'll check on Tubi, completely free & a RIGHTEOUS TON of categories. I sound like I'm promoting them, but I'm not being compensated !😀
Research for term papers was almost something of a SUPERPOWER for me in University, but even then there aren't always the results that one wants / needs.

Need to start watching this! I'm interested in how you're presenting Blackthorne as both reacting to and accepting of what's around him.
It's damned good. I dare say you'll enjoy it.

THE NINJA NOVELS!!!!!!!!!!!! YES! LOL. Yeah, I suspect they would not hold up well, but... hey, it's just fiction. =D

I need to get caught up on Shogun. I remember the original series REASONABLY well, which is almost equal to saying that I remember zed about it.
I always wanted to see Japan. In the 70's, I had bunches of Japanese penfriends back then, even learned some phrases.

Always the way. Can never find what I'm looking for either. Hope you find it.
HA! I know the feeling.
